Dear Cornerstone Family,
Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instant Messenger are super popular today. Do you know why? We long to be connected, but we also engage in heated conversations that often disconnect us. There are many things that can divide us if we let them. Some of them are serious like politics. Some of them are less serious like food, but the question I want to ask is, “What will make an eternal difference?” Lately, I’ve seen a lot of “word wars” on social media. This is where people give their opinion on subjects, which isn’t always bad, but many times I read some hateful comments and reactions. Personally speaking, there are times we should not engage. In John 17:20-21 (NLT) Jesus prayed, “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.” Jesus prayed for His church to be ONE, and by their oneness, the world would believe in Him. Jesus came to unite people of all different ethnicities, bringing reconciliation and creating a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural church. His cross unites us rather than divides us.
Unfortunately, from the first century until now, we often miss the big picture and fight and squabble over little things that will not make an eternal difference. In Romans 14:1 (NIV) Paul writes, “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters.” What was the church arguing over? Some big theological issue? Nope. Some immoral behavior? Nope. Jesus had just paid for the penalty of the sins of the world by dying on the cross and rising from the dead, and the church was judging each other over food and drink. If we want our church to make an eternal difference in our community, then we must be united and embrace what unites us in Jesus Christ. Our remember verse for this series will be Colossians 3:11 (NLT) which says, “In this new life, it doesn’t matter if you are a Jew or a Gentile, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbaric, uncivilized, slave, or free. Christ is all that matters, and He lives in all of us.”
Here is my prayer for the next four weeks as we embrace the concept of being ONE for the sake of the Gospel, “Lord, help us to focus on the mercy and grace we receive in Christ to be more important than petty differences, preferences and personal agendas.”
