Identity Of Integrity (Devotional 6-7-17)

Dear Cornerstone Family,

In Deuteronomy chapter 6, God calls us first to love Him with all our hearts, soul, and strength and then to raise our children to love and honor Him.  We cannot bring our children any farther than we are willing to go. Deuteronomy 6:7 (NIV) teaches us, “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”  God calls us to model loving Him first and then to discuss His principles in daily conversations with our children.  If you are like me, there are few principles I learned the fist time I heard them.  Be patient with your children and let it become a family discussion on applying God’s Word in your everyday lives. Every instruction God gives us is for our protection and His provision for life.  God is a good God and He cares about us.

Sometimes we can get caught up in giving rules to our children and forget to train their hearts.  If all they hear and see is a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” they may forget our salvation is based upon grace and the relationship we have with Jesus.  As we give instructions to our children, we must remember to always give the moral reason “why” behind every rule we live by or we will become legalistic in nature. The problem comes when we elevate the rule over the principle.  Dallas Willard, in The Divine Conspiracy, brings up the important contrast of “Sin Management or Spiritual Transformation?” This is important if you want to train your children to understand God’s grace and the power of our new life in Christ, then we must train our hearts to the principle love, honor, and respect. In Matthew 22:37-40 (NIV) Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Did you catch that?  If we can train our hearts and our children’s to honor the principle of loving God and loving others then we will fulfill what God wants for our lives.

How can your family improve in raising the bar of loving God and others?

Following THE Leader with you,

Pastor Ed Turley

  • Child Dedication Service – June 18

A child dedication service is not what most people think it is.  This is not a time where salvation is given or acquired.  This is a time when a family comes and dedicates their lives to raise their child in a God honoring, Bible believing way (Deuteronomy 6:4-6). To sign up, please contact the church office at 858-748-2327 or email: pastored@cornerstonepoway.com so I can meet with you to go over your part in this service.
